Abstract
The purpose of this composition was to find out, from a child’s point of view, where, what and with whom children play. Our ambitions were also to examine if perspectives like gender, ethnicities and different types of housing will strike off the children’s play. Our main questions regarded the signification of language in choice of playmate, the resemblance and difference in girls respectively boys games and how the nearest outdoor environment and type of housing effect the games. We have used qualitative methods, such as group interviews and participant observations with children between six and nine years old. Our results showed that games with rules and group playing were most common and that the constructed playgrounds were popular.... (More)

We have used qualitative methods, such as group interviews and participant observations with children between six and nine years old. Our results showed that games with rules and group playing were most common and that the constructed playgrounds were popular. Girls and boys played mostly separated but there were also an occurrence of gender mixed groups. Boys often played games which include physical activity while girls preferably played less intense and more verbal. The results showed that different kinds of housings did have an influence on what children played. Our results also showed that different terms of language were a natural element in children’s daily life. Language was not an important factor when children chose a playmate. (Less)
