- Abstract
- This essay tries to find out if the big city, the metropolis, can offer a free life for its inhabitants. The criteria for a free life are that you have individual freedom, tolerance, anonymity and heterogeneity. This means that the big city holds a diverse population with different life styles, views on life, attitudes and more. Do these heterogeneous consequences come from a tolerant atmosphere? Can you live a more anonymous life in the big city whatever lifestyle or background you have? Is there a certain tolerance, and personal freedom, for various expressions that can be linked to the big city’s atmosphere? - This essay tries to find out if the big city, the metropolis, can offer a free life for its inhabitants. The criteria for a free life are that you have individual freedom, tolerance, anonymity and heterogeneity. These theories where followed by six interviews with residents in the Los Angeles area, as a complement. The research done for this essay pointed at the fact that you probably could find a certain amount of personal freedom linked to the big city, but there are also negative sides like indifference and loneliness.
