Abstract
This study investigated the validity of the Children's Sense of Coherence Scale, CSOC (in Swedish BarnKASAM-testet). We also studied if the test, from a developmental psychological point of view, was possible to use with children in grade 1-4, aged 7-11 years old. The results of the scale were also compared with two other test instruments that were expected to measure similar qualities. The CSOC is a questionnaire with 16 items which is suppose to identify salutogenic factors by describing the child's feeling of confidence in its world. Our study found that the results of the test agreed with the salutogenic definition of health as an ease/disease continuum. We found no significant differences in the test results due to gender, age or what... (More)

Our study found that the results of the test agreed with the salutogenic definition of health as an ease/disease continuum. We found no significant differences in the test results due to gender, age or what adults the child lived with. Concerning the relations with the two other test instruments our study didn't show the positive correlations that we expected. Our conclusion was that the CSOC should not, in its current form, be used with children aged 7-9, because we questioned if they understood it and how that effected the test's validity. (Less)
