- The main purpose of this essay was to study how the needs of the children and the best interest of the child, as it is described in the UN Conventions on the rights of the child (crc), are covered during the evaluation of providing supplementary benefit on a social services department. - The main purpose of this essay was to study how the needs of the children and the best interest of the child, as it is described in the UN Conventions on the rights of the child (crc), are covered during the evaluation of providing supplementary benefit on a social services department. Based on this, I have formulated important questions. · How is the concept " best interest of the child" defined by the social workers? · Is the concept used in the decision process and if yes, how? · How is the social worker investigating the needs of the child at the social services department? To obtain answers on these questions, I decided to execute a qualitative case study interviewing social workers at a particular social services department. The main result of the essay is that the social workers are aware of the concept of the best interest of the child. However, in some cases there was a wish that there should be more focus on the children’s perspective. On the other hand, there is not a common view on what the children’s perspective is. During the evaluation of providing supplementary benefit, focus is on the parents since they are supposed to take responsibility for the family. (Less)
