- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay was to examine how young girls experience the media as a norm and which attitudes and values it creates within the group. Questions that have been discussed are: - In what way are the girls’ attitudes influenced by what media introduce? - What opinion do the girls have of the medias range and messages? - Do the girls have a view of media as a model, and how do they value this? - Can a young girl today choose for herself what she wants to look like, on the basis of her own values? Our work was focused on these specific questions and we examined the issue by talking to nine girls in the age range of 16 to 19 years of age. We carried out two group interviews, where four girls attended the first occasion, and five... (More)

Our work was focused on these specific questions and we examined the issue by talking to nine girls in the age range of 16 to 19 years of age. We carried out two group interviews, where four girls attended the first occasion, and five girls attended the second occasion. The girls discussed four themes in a two-hour period. We used there opinions to se patterns in girls way of viewing the media and there messages. The purpose was to examine if young girls today are independent in their way of constructing their identity, or if they are influenced by the images that the media present, and if they are representing the ideal that girls models themselves on. We noticed that girls today do model themselves after the images in the media, but we discovered that this is not necessarily a way of being manipulated by the media to a greater extent, but a tool for the girls that they can rely on in there interaction among themselves.
