- In a long time homosexuality has been a taboo. During the last century the attitude to homosexual people in Sweden has changed, e.g. today homosexual couples can be proved for adoption. But there are still prejustices and negative attitudes left. Most of the people who discover that they are interested in people with the same sex start as a teenager to consider if they are homosexual or not. The teenage years are a quite sensitive period in each individual life. During this period the individual is supposed to create an own identity, which includes the sexual identity. - In a long time homosexuality has been a taboo. During the last century the attitude to homosexual people in Sweden has changed, e.g. today homosexual couples can be proved for adoption. But there are still prejustices and negative attitudes left. Most of the people who discover that they are interested in people with the same sex start as a teenager to consider if they are homosexual or not. The teenage years are a quite sensitive period in each individual life. During this period the individual is supposed to create an own identity, which includes the sexual identity. The purpose with this paper was to analyse how the coming-out process is described in books written for teenagers. I wanted to find out when teenagers tell someone else that they may be homosexual and which circumstances that has to be fulfilled so that teenagers venture to talk about their homosexuality. I also wanted to know if there are differences between boys and girls regarding how their friends and families react. I found no considerable differences depending on the gender. The teenagers were between 15 and 16 years old when they first told someone about their feelings. In these books all teenagers wanted to talk to someone they trusted and who did not judge them. This appeared to be the most important circumstance for all of them. I also found that no one wanted to talk about his or her feelings in their parent's house. There were only a few teenagers who told their parents. (Less)
