- Abstract
- The purpose of the essay was to describe the use of drugs among adolescents in Sweden. Special emphasis has been laid on the differences between boys and girls. Central questions were: How to define drug abuse among adolescents? In what way has the use of drugs changed over time? Does the use of drugs differ between boys and girls? In what ways? The study was based entirely on secondary data. - The purpose of the essay was to describe the use of drugs among adolescents in Sweden. Special emphasis has been laid on the differences between boys and girls. Central questions were: How to define drug abuse among adolescents? In what way has the use of drugs changed over time? Does the use of drugs differ between boys and girls? In what ways? Although the problem of adolescent drug abuse has been a well-known problem since the 1960's there still does not exist any systems for diagnosis and no guidelines for standardized classifications. The results, based mainly on three different studies carried out in Stockholm 1967, 1979/80 and 1988, showed that the age of first use of drugs has decreased since 1967. The use of injecting drugs has become more uncommon. Cannabis has, over the years, been the most frequently used drug but it has also been very common to use several different substances simultaneously. All studies showed differences between girls and boys. Girls more often injected drugs and also used heavier drugs then boys. Differences were found in the way girls and boys were brought up. Boys were allowed more freedom and girls were more supervised. Criminality was more common and graver among boys. (Less)
