Abstract
The aim of this essay was to find out how children are paid attention to by staff at emergency wards, when a close relative unexpectedly passes away. We had five questions to help us to reach our aim: · How can helpers work with children in acute crises? · How can children in crises react? · What apprehension does children have of death during different ages? · How much should children participate? · What do the helpers think about future development of support for children in crises? To find this out, we gathered information through literature and interviews with professional workers such as priests, almoners and one psychologist. To find this out, we gathered information through literature and interviews with professional workers such as priests, almoners and one psychologist. Our aim and the five questions above was answered in our theoretical and empirical material. To analyse our material we used a qualitative method. We chose parts that were especially interesting to analyse. Children’s participation were especially emphasised in the theoretical and empirical material. During the gathering of the empirical material an spiritual and existential aspect appeared, which wasn’t emphasised in the theoretical material. We got the impression that the people we interviewed could give children in crises good care. The most fundamental conclusion was that we must carry our theoretical knowledge with the wisdom that each person is unique! (Less)
