- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to investigate how immigrant mothers in Sweden view their social network and how they think their social network affects their parenthood. The study is based on a qualitative method. We interviewed eight immigrant women with children under the age of 18. During the interviews we used maps of networks in order to get a clearer picture of the size and the structure of the women’s networks. - The purpose of this study was to investigate how immigrant mothers in Sweden view their social network and how they think their social network affects their parenthood. The study is based on a qualitative method. We interviewed eight immigrant women with children under the age of 18. During the interviews we used maps of networks in order to get a clearer picture of the size and the structure of the women’s networks. In our study we used social network theory and an ecological approach on child development which both suggest that a child’s development is not only a product of the relationship he or she has with the parents but it is also affected by the relationships the child has with other adults like grandparents, friends of the family, neighbours, school teachers and so on. We found that the networks of the majority of the women consisted of family members and friends rather than of neighbours and colleagues. For all the women the immediate family as well as the extended family were important sources of practical and emotional support. We found that most of the women in our study were satisfied with their social network. All the women experienced their social networks as having a positive effect on their parenthood. (Less)
