Abstract
The purpose of this essay was to examine the counter play and mutual influence between a group of regular frequenters, the regular him/herself, and the pub; and also how the individual influenced this interplay and was influenced by it. How would the regulars describe the norms within the group? The method was a qualitative case study based on five interviews with regulars on a particular pub. The main conclusion of this essay was that the relationship between the regular and the pub was much deeper than we first believed. Except for drinking beer, they also visited the pub to reinforce their identity, find fellowship and show others which group they belonged to. They also used the pub and their style in a way to direct other people’s perception of them, thereby show others who they wanted to be. The regular’s identity was partly characterized by their style, the group of regulars and the pub itself. (Less)
