This essay focus on the actions three corporations in the city of Halmstad engaged when alcohol- and drug abuse were discovered among their employees. Important questions were the judicial obligations toward employees, knowledge on alcohol- and drug abuse within the company, alcohol- and drug policies, differences in actions according to type of abuse, reasons for dealing with employees with alcohol- and drug abuse, methods of controlling the employees and the timing of the actions. The method used in this essay was semi-structured interviews with representatives from the unions and administrations. By using Michel Foucault's work on power and knowledge and combining this with theories on organizations the actions turned out to be tools of power, legitimised by social science in order to control the employees, moulding them into an effective labour force. Alcohol- and drug abuse were turned into threatening objects, which were met with treatment, signing contracts and/or exclusion from the worksite. By analysing the labour laws in Sweden, and the alcohol- and drug policies in each corporation there was an inconsistency between the written material and the answers from the interviews. There were more factors controlling the actions than were found in the written material. Factors such as length of employment, type of work and work skills were given an important role in deciding actions against alcohol- and drug abuse. (Less)
