Abstract
In recent years extensive medical progress has been made regarding HIV- research and with the assistance of antiretroviral drugs people who are infected with HIV are now able to live for a much longer time. Despite these advancements HIV is still an incurable and deadly disease and in 2007 541 new cases were reported in Sweden. HIV-infection is not common among young Swedish people. However, the increased level of Chlamydia is possibly a result of a greater number of young people taking greater sexual risks. The purpose of this study was to examine how the task of HIV-prevention is carried out, whether there is a main risk group that is particularly exposed to HIV-infection, and how professionals perceive youth attitudes towards... However, the increased level of Chlamydia is possibly a result of a greater number of young people taking greater sexual risks. The purpose of this study was to examine how the task of HIV-prevention is carried out, whether there is a main risk group that is particularly exposed to HIV-infection, and how professionals perceive youth attitudes towards HIV-infection. For the purpose of the study seven people from six different organizations that deal with STI/HIV-prevention in their daily work were interviewed. The Social Cognitive Theory has been applied as the underlining foundation for the understanding of work related to HIV-prevention. Also taken into account in the study are the views on risk and risk perception to asses sexual risk behaviour. Through the interview respondents and literature it was derived that common models for work related to HIV-prevention often includes MI (Motivational Interviews) and peer education with the intention of both providing accurate and accessible information. The study has also found that risk behaviour is a more appropriate method for determining the risk level of HIV-infection, rather than dividing people into risk groups. Risk perception takes a significant role in the study, regarding both the assessment of young people's attitudes toward STI/HIV and how professionals speak about youth and risk taking. Ultimately condom use is one of the most efficient ways of preventing STI/HIV-infections. Despite this, interviewees report that young people are hesitant to use condoms due to embarrassment, neglect as well as other reasons. Beyond the effort made by the organizations working with HIV prevention the public education system should take it upon themselves to create an open dialogue regarding the prevention of STI/HIV by engaging the youth in open and honest dialogue.
