Abstract
The transition from care to independent living is a critical period in the lives of young people leaving residential care. The purpose of this study was to find out what young people leaving residential care need for a successful re-adaptation to society. Another purpose was to find out from research the essential factors for good outcomes to last after residential care. In order to find out I conducted six qualitative interviews with staff from a home for special supervision and staff from a non-governmental organization for follow-up support for young criminals. In my analyses three main themes were identified that seemed to play an important role for young people leaving care: relationship to a key-worker, family and friends,... (More)

In order to find out I conducted six qualitative interviews with staff from a home for special supervision and staff from a non-governmental organization for follow-up support for young criminals. In my analyses three main themes were identified that seemed to play an important role for young people leaving care: relationship to a key-worker, family and friends, occupation, and housing. Hilchen Sommerschilds theory containing coping, resilience, protective factors and sense of coherence (SOC) were used as a potential way of understanding. My conclusion is that the relationship to a key-worker, family and friend can be seen as important factors, but the key element is that the young people have a relationship to a significant other that will last during the leaving care process. It is also very important that the young people have a meaningful occupation, that they themselves have been involved in planning and creating. Housing is also an essential factor in the leaving care process. It is important that the young people are involved in creating their own environment. This seems to have a positive effect in the well-being for young people leaving care. Another important factor is that the children's home/supervision home start planning for the transition from care to society as soon as a young person is admitted. (Less)
