Abstract (Swedish)
This essay approaches the reproductive health of women in the Roman empire – mainly documented by the Greek-Roman medicus Soranos – by comparing them to women in developing countries to-day, as described by WHO-reports. I have recognized similarities in many respects.
Though Roman upper class women had access to the best medical care of their time they risked their lives in child-birth and by abortion in the same way as many third world women still do.
They also had a similar kind of family life within a patriarchal society.
Very little is known about the lives of poor rural Roman women. They were probably affected by poor nutrition, diseases and a lack of sanitary facilities as are women in the poorest parts of developing countries... (More)
