Abstract
In 1997 Indonesia was hit by the Asian economic crisis and started a huge downfall in the Indonesian economy. As this study argues, the transition from authoritarian rule towards democracy in Indonesia can be seen as a process driven by certain actors interacting and negotiating with each other. The elections in 1999 can be seen as a result of different elite actors initiating pacts, marked by compromises, in the purpose of securing a stable transition towards a new and more democratic era.
A helpful and important tool in explaining the Indonesian transition will in this case study be the theories developed by Guillermo O´Donnell and Philippe C. Schmitter. These theories will be tested and applied in the purpose of generating scope and precision to the study of actors and their way of affecting the process of transition. (Less)
