The importance of energy security for modern economies has increased in recentyears. The role of energy security has lately also been closely attached to national security which has had an effect on the international political arena and nation’s foreign policies.
This bachelor thesis tries to analyze how the energy conflicts between Russia and Belarus (2004) and between Russian and Ukraine (2006) can be explained.
With the method of agreement the study first tries to find what common independent variable enabled the energy conflicts. The importance of energy security for modern economies has increased in recentyears. The role of energy security has lately also been closely attached to national security which has had an effect on the international political arena and nation’s foreign policies.
This bachelor thesis tries to analyze how the energy conflicts between Russia and Belarus (2004) and between Russian and Ukraine (2006) can be explained.
With the method of agreement the study first tries to find what common independent variable enabled the energy conflicts. Since 2005 Ukraine and Belarus have gone separated paths in many ways, especially in the relationship towards Russia and the west. The conclusion is that Ukraine’s and Belarus’ energy policies and energy dependence on Russia are the most likely common variable that enabled the conflicts with Russia.
The second part analyzes the Russian motives. The conclusions are that more than the economic factor was at stake. The new Russian energy policy, the aspiration of influence in Ukraine and Belarus and the attempt to prevent a western expansion were all motives for Russia’s actions in the conflicts and were tried to be accomplish with the use of economic statecraft.
