Abstract (Swedish)
This study examines if there is a hidden normative Swedish nationalism in the Swedish language school for immigrants (Sfi) and if so, how it has been portrayed historically and how it is depicted now. With the help of Umut Özkirimlis theory; dimensions of nationalism and the social constructivist theory, I have analyzed the literature used in Sfi. The methodology used in this study has been a qualitative text analysis. Although nationalism and identity is multi-faceted, multi-dimensioned and ambiguous, I have found a dichotomy between”us - Swedes” and”them - the immigrants” in the literature. The Swedish culture is hegemonized, immigrants and Swedes as groups are homogenized and the Swedish culture naturally therefore has an effect on... (More)
This study examines if there is a hidden normative Swedish nationalism in the Swedish language school for immigrants (Sfi) and if so, how it has been portrayed historically and how it is depicted now. The methodology used in this study has been a qualitative text analysis. Although nationalism and identity is multi-faceted, multi-dimensioned and ambiguous, I have found a dichotomy between”us - Swedes” and”them - the immigrants” in the literature. The Swedish culture is hegemonized, immigrants and Swedes as groups are homogenized and the Swedish culture naturally therefore has an effect on society. Furthermore the Swedish nationalism depicted is banal. This makes it hard to distinguish Swedish phenomenon as typically Swedish. The purpose of Sfi is no longer to directly teach knowledge about the Swedish society. In spite of this immigrants probably still get indirect impressions and information about Swedishness through the language study alone. In Sweden perhaps, a normative nationalism could connect people and increase tolerance, increase respect between individuals and improve integration in the Swedish society. (Less)
