- Abstract
- In October 2008, the Swedish government made a resolution about a testing period for advanced classes in some of the Swedish high schools. After about a year the Swedish minister of education, Jan Björklund, made a statement that he wished that the try with the so called elite classes be extended to the primary schools. Amongst the educationalists the opinions are divided about what is best for the pupils. How is the Swedish school going to provide an education for the pupils on their level? What consequence could it bring by implementing elite classes in primary school? What other methods can there be for providing education on their level, even the gifted? In part one of my paper, I will show different country’s school system and their view on gifted pupils. In part two I will analyse the Swedish debate about elite class’s existence and in part three I will discuss different educationalist models (acceleration, grouping after ability and deeper studying). The models are analysed from the educationalists Gunilla O. Wahlström, Roland S. Persson and Ellen Winner. My conclusion shows how important it is that the old traditions are broken and that all pupils get to take their place in the Swedish school. (Less)
