Abstract
The purpose of this study and the overall question was to find reasons why individuals become overindebted. The main method has been record research. Application forms from 60 individuals regarding debt adjustment have been examined and analyzed. Functionalistic and marxistic theories have been used to achieve an overall understanding for the phenomenon. On a concrete level, theories by Peter Dellgran and Per Arne Tufte have mainly been used. The result pointed out that consumption, investments in business/companies and housing were the main reasons to become overindebted. The results also showed that most of the overindebted individuals explained their problematic economic situation to dramatic life events as broken relations,... (More)

The result pointed out that consumption, investments in business/companies and housing were the main reasons to become overindebted. The results also showed that most of the overindebted individuals explained their problematic economic situation to dramatic life events as broken relations, unemployment and diseases. The result also pointed out that the payment capacity was an important variable in order to explain overindebtedness and that it is likely that there is a connection between dramatic life events and the payment capacity. The overindebted turned out to have an extremely low payment capacity and due to that, the incomes were also very low. This means that the study showed that the phenomenon overindebtedness not only is a question of high indebtedness itself. Dramatic life events and payment capacity can also be variables that can lead to overindebtedness. (Less)
