Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine which perceptions the nursing staffs in the elderly care has about leadership styles, the leader's position in the organization and the leader's competence. I chose this subject because there have been major changes in the welfare sector that have affected the organization, leadership and the direct care work. My quantitative study was carried out using questionnaires which nursing staff from two different work areas participated in. The purpose of this study was to examine which perceptions the nursing staffs in the elderly care has about leadership styles, the leader's position in the organization and the leader's competence. I chose this subject because there have been major changes in the welfare sector that have affected the organization, leadership and the direct care work. My quantitative study was carried out using questionnaires which nursing staff from two different work areas participated in. The theories that have been used in the paper are essentially about different leadership styles and concepts such as control band and competence. The results of the survey showed that the nursing staff felt that a leader who allows employees to develop, gives encouragement and support, shows trust and is available on demand as well as responsive characterizes a good leadership style. Compared to theories this corresponds mostly to a situation adapted leader but partly also to a transformative leader. The results also showed that the respondents overwhelmingly felt that the manager's geographical location was relevant to the availability. About half of the respondents thought that a manager should have a social worker or social care education, but even nursing was desirable. According to the nursing staff it was also important that the manager possesses competence in the form of mainly personal competence and professional experience which differed slightly compared to the results from previous research.
