Abstract
The aim of this essay is to examine discourses in statements for young offenders aged 15 to 17 years written by the social service in closed criminal cases. The discourses are based on constructions of social background, social values and behavior and acceptance. We have also chosen to look at how statements written by the social service are being used in the verdict and the possible impact on the outcome of the decision. The method used in our essay is qualitative discourse analysis, using the Laclau and Mouffes discourse theory (Winther Jörgensen & Phillips, 2000).
