Abstract (Swedish)
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to analyze the potential of local people to reduce the risk of disasters caused by the drought hazard. Evidence was collected through the application of a multiple case study methodology during field based research conducted in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, one of the most vulnerable countries in terms of drought hazard. The study focused on watershed development initiatives which are built on active participation of community members. The collected evidence demonstrated that local people can reduce the risk of disaster themselves if there is proper initiative and coordinated action supplemented with adequate technical knowledge.
The conclusion of the study is that the potential of the... (More)
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to analyze the potential of local people to reduce the risk of disasters caused by the drought hazard.
The conclusion of the study is that the potential of the local people to identify and address their vulnerability - a key element in disaster risk reduction - is largely uncontested. However, they lack adequate resources and skills to effectively address it independently. (Less)
