- Common phenomenons today are so called failed states. These states are
characterised by among other factors civil war, insecurity and corruption. An important step towards escaping this precarious position is ending the violent conflict that reigns in the country. Bearing this in mind I have studied transition-period, the period between a peace agreement and national elections, in three states: Sierra Leone, Liberia and DR Congo. In doing so I hoped to reach conclusions concerning what processes must take place during the transition-period to ensure that a state does not return to violent conflict after elections have been held.
