- Abstract
- Israel is often referred to as a fragmented state, with the situation between Palestinians and Jews in mind. In Israel however, there are far more fragmentations – even among the Jewish populations. Ethnical differences between Ashkenazi and Mizrahi, religious differences between ultra-orthodox, orthodox and secular, and ideological differences within the Zionist-framework.

The Jewish and Israeli identities have stayed strong for very long, this because of one thing: Zionism. The Zionists started preparing for the Jewish state as early as in the 1800s.
With the identity research of Nationalism as a base, especially modernism and primordialism, this thesis investigates the meaning of the Jewish elements in the Israeli identity, among Jews in Israel and in the Diaspora.
The conclusion is: There is conflict within the Jewish community both within and outside of Israel. Some say you can not be a Jew and at the same time criticize Israel, that makes you an anti-Zionist and a self-hater. Others say that the Zionist identity is the exact same thing as the Israeli nationalist one. (Less)
