Socialworkers and policemen play an important role in the work with victim-offender mediation in Sweden, and therefore their knowledge, experiences and thoughts about it is what this qualitative study is based upon. There is a law in Sweden that the social services must ask offenders under the age of 21 if they would consider taking part in victim-offender mediation. Other than that every local authority can prosecute their work with victim-offender mediation rather freely. This results in great variety regarding the victim-offender mediation throughout the country and therefore also variations regarding the working conditions for the socialworkers and policemen who practise and work with victim-offender mediation. This study includes representatives from three different cities which opened for the possibilitiy to compare the different perspectives of the socialworkers and policemen. Victim-offender mediation is still a relatively new method to use in Sweden and has still not been properly evaluated. In spite of this, there is a generel understanding among those who work with victim-offender mediation, the parliament and the local authorities that it is a good method to use. The question is how to work with victim-offender mediation in Sweden in a way that gives visible and good effects in the society so that even more effort is made to develop the method. (Less)
