- Abstract
- This thesis is the result of a work for Saab Automobile AB in Trollhättan, and more
specifically the Department of under hood design. The project has been to Lund
University and finishes my education in Technical Design. Supervisor at the company
who has assisted me with much help is Andreas Barbunopulos and supervisors at the
school have been Ola Carlquist and Karl-Axel Andersson. The purpose of the thesis has
been to produce an engine cover to a motor placed in one or more of GM’s car models.

been to produce an engine cover to a motor placed in one or more of GM’s car models.
The work deals with the process and the working structure used in developing engine
covers. The report includes both the work structure in general and my own work process.
The methodology used in the project is inspired by the company's own way of working
with similar projects.
The engine in the project would be used in several car models in GM and its engine
cover needed to be adapted to the smallest engine room. As a result, the engine looked
very small and silly in the biggest engine rooms. But now arises the opportunity to
develop a separate engine cover for these models that only need to be adapted to one or a few engine rooms. As a result of this, more space creates to find a well-functioning design and a greater opportunity to cover more of the engine components.
The first step in the work is to determine what the cover should be capable of and what
we want with its function and appearance. To see how the engine covers of the
competitor’s looks and what they have choose for strategy, we make an analysis of the
existing engine covers. Now when we know what we want, we begin to generate ideas by
producing a lot of sketches by hand. When we found enough ideas the work continues in
Photoshop where the sketches can be more detailed and realistic. The best three design
alternatives will be sent for a selection and the person who made this will also provide
guidance for further work. The work will now continue in the 3D-modeling program
Alias where the final design will be shaped in cooperation with the involved construction departments. With all the necessary engine components in place the cover could be designed with the right distance to them all, to ensure no parts will collide when the detail later is in use. Curves are built up and bound together with each other with different methods to surfaces. Modifications take place until we all are satisfied with the result and the cover is harmonious and aesthetically pleasing. Weather the cover will be manufactured or not will now be determined witch is based on the supplier’s best price and the benefits of the cover.
The reason for the project's genesis and therefore perhaps the most important function is the covering of the majority of the engine components, witch is fulfilled. Additional
features that belong to the objectives for the cover were that it should be enable to
manufacture, be noise absorbing, see the number of cylinders and see strong. My view is
that these goals have been reached or have been given sufficient opportunities to do so. The fact that the work has been done in a real project meant that opportunities to
influence the working method were small. This is partly because we were several people
involved in the project and that my participation in this group was new. The project was
very time-pressed and there was therefore no room to take a chance. But the structure
and working process has worked very well, largely because the process has been well-
tested and continually modified in previous projects. (Less)
