Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to introduce new and innovative solutions in the field of
weapon packaging. Integration of the concept Insensitive Munitions1 (IM) in the
packaging was also a main objective.

The method used to achieve this thesis is a merge of the product development methods
derived by Ulrich and Eppinger and methods taught in the course Designmetodik
IDE062. Designer tools like image boards, briefs and functional analyses were combined
with rational concept selection methods in order to obtain a creative and productive
environment.

with rational concept selection methods in order to obtain a creative and productive
environment.

An initial study of the requirements a weapon packaging is obligated to meet was
conducted. This resulted in a requirement specification which laid the foundations for
the thesis. A functional analysis was then derived, based on the specification. The
functional analysis was used as a catalyst for the creative process. Excessive brainstorming and idea generation was conducted upon the functional analysis. Research of existing products and markets was done in order to obtain inspiration. Emphasis was laid on exploring other markets than the military since it was believed that new influences were needed. The ideas produced by the brainstorming were then evaluated by different selection processes. Development of the best ranked ideas in the selection processes ended in innovative concepts. Tests were also conducted upon basic design ideas.

The result of the thesis is a new and innovative concept for weapon packaging, which
meets the objectives for this thesis. The concept fulfils most of the requirements stated in the requirement specification and integrates IM thinking. Further research and
development is, however, recommended since the scope of the thesis was limited and
studies at more detailed and specialized levels are necessary. (Less)
