Abstract
The focus of company’s aftermarket is no longer only the “machine shop” where
aftermarket finds solutions to offer spare parts to the customers. Instead
aftermarket is focused on technological improvements that continue to change and
improve on the way aftermarket operates. The way aftermarket operates has shifted
from reading documents to be more integrated with computers and the next step is,
for example to operate in a CAD environment. All of these tools not only enhance
the quality of the products, but also improve the response time on complex

engineering design changes. This makes it possible for the aftermarket to evaluate
if an article works in the perspective of the aftermarket already in the conceptual
design stage. To compete, companies must embrace new technologies and develop
innovative ways to apply them with their business.
When you identify a problem vehicle, do you want a supplier who will simply
replicate the part, or do you want to improve the reliability of the equipment by
analyzing the root cause of the problem and offering solutions to address that
problem? With fewer people and continued emphasis on both operational and
financial results, equipment reliability must be a key focus. The ability to deliver
reliability on a consistent basis will become a more important factor in a supplier
selection in the future.
To avoid the high capital cost of redesigning vehicles, areas where problems could
arise should be identified in an early stage and redesigned already in the CAD
environment. One way of making this possible is to apply a new method which
purpose is to improve the product development process.
The purpose of this thesis is to adapt a new method at Volvo Parts which objective
is to capture, store and reuse information and knowledge both internal in Volvo
Parts and external, including several departments and business units. The mode of
operation is to identify areas where problem arise and analyze if KBE tools could
improve the process and suppress the problems. By identifying knowledge that
exist in Volvo Parts and making it accessible in an early stage at the product
development process, problems that occur in the present situation could be
eliminated. (Less)
