Abstract
FAS Converting Machinery AB makes machines for plastic-bag manufacturing. The
company is located in Ystad in the very south of Sweden. They want a new method for
detecting the perforated joints between the plastic-bags, to make the machine able to
count the number of bags rolled up.
The current method uses a spark that goes through the small holes in the perforation.
That method does not work at high speed (~3 m/s) nor when using recycled plastic.
The goal of this thesis is to find a new method for detecting the joints. The method
should be reliable for different types of bags (different colours, materials and folded in
different ways).
For the solutions different medias have been investigated such as: light, laser, sound,

should be reliable for different types of bags (different colours, materials and folded in
different ways).
For the solutions different medias have been investigated such as: light, laser, sound,
compressed air, (liquids), and mechanical solutions using nylon string, steel string and
other materials.
To verify the ideas a testing rig made of a large cylinder driven by an electric motor was
built. Maximum speed for the cylinders surface is 3.3 m/s, same as the fastest bag
machines. The bags can be attached directly on the outside of the cylinder or as a loop
around the cylinder and a bar, depending on the method that is being tested. (Less)
