Abstract
Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB has for the production of Optima 3, decided to replace the existing welding equipment with a new laser-welding process, to weld the spacer that keeps the fuel rods in place at the fuel box. The author wrote this master thesis for the department of Mechanical construction, MKON within the Faculty of Engineering of Lunds University. The goal was to examine Westinghouse`s existing weld fixture to determine its strengths and weaknesses, but also to investigate other possible principles of construction for a new weld fixture, then construct and test the principles of the new weld fixture. Focus will be put on creating a fixture that can produce spacers with good dimensions. To make sure the work does not take to much time, no consideration has taken of automatizing the production.
To map out the existing weld fixture different measurements, interviews and examinations where made. With help from this preliminary investigation, companyneeds and goalspecifications could be formulated and work as a base for the upcoming construction work.
The choosen principle construction was a weld fixture that could be turned around to make it possible to weld both sides of the spacer without loose it.
The result of the work ended up in a new weld fixture that used other construction principles then the existing one. Spacers were produced in the new fixture and compared to earlier produced spacers.
The final recommendation was to replace the existing fixture only if the company wanted to avoid the follow-up work with the spacer. (Less)
