Abstract
Problem descrip-tion:
Design codes today are generally based on simplified hand-book calculations, which cause problems with the application of FEM. There are no recommendations in the design codes on how FEM shall be applied when performing fatigue life analysis of welded joints. The difficulty lies in how the results shall be interpreted.
Objective:
The objective with this project is to establish evaluation meth-ods of welded joints, with the respect to material fatigue, with applied FEM. The evaluation methods shall be worked out so that suitable design codes can be used. The focus is put on pre- and post-processing to come up with methods to attain desired results, with consideration of the required work effort.

The evaluation methods shall be worked out so that suitable design codes can be used. The focus is put on pre- and post-processing to come up with methods to attain desired results, with consideration of the required work effort.
Method:
Extensive literature study was performed of the design codes Eurocode3 and BSK99, published technical journals and arti-cles regarding fatigue assessments methods. A comparison of different design codes are put together. Evaluations were per-formed on test models to facilitate for the real case study, of a typical welded framework. Evaluation methods shall as far as possible meet the evaluation according to Eurocode3.
Conclusion:
The master thesis objectives are fulfilled since recommenda-tions are presented for FE-modeling methods and FE-results interpretation methods, which comply with the design codes requirements on fatigue analysis of welded joints. (Less)
