Stainless Steel in Mobile Phones

Abstract
This master thesis explores the usage of stainless steel in mobile phones. The first part is an introduction to stainless steel which explains the properties of the different stainless steels, and also the most common methods used for sheet metal production. It is concluded with a selection process to determine which stainless steels are best suited to be used at Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications (SEMC).
When looking at stainless steel an interest grew to further investigate alternative materials. This master thesis explores the usage of stainless steel in mobile phones. The first part is an introduction to stainless steel which explains the properties of the different stainless steels, and also the most common methods used for sheet metal production. The main part of the thesis focused on how the surface can be altered to improve flatness and stiffness/strength. A waffle pattern was used to control flatness, and a coining pattern to increase the stiffness/strength. (Less)
