Abstract
Background
The telecommunication market is characterized by short product life cycles why the
time of the development process has to be minimized. This means lack of time in the
development process why known and tried design solutions are being used to a great
extent instead of trying new and less conventional solutions. The market is also
striving to minimize the size of the mobile phone while increasing the content of
technology. This sometimes means that conventional solutions can not be used and
new has to be ascertained and tested. By finding correlations between certain design
solutions and their mechanical properties, a set of tests and their results can be seen as
a guide for future product development.

Background

solutions and their mechanical properties, a set of tests and their results can be seen as
a guide for future product development.
Aim and Objective
The aim of this thesis is to find possibilities of reducing the total thickness around the
LCD with consideration taken to mechanical performance, cost- and volume aspects.
The mechanical performance of the LCD-system must be retained or improved. The
work should result in a general design guide containing conditions for a successful
design of the LCD-system.
Method
Information is gathered through studies of written information and interviews with
mainly employees at Sony Ericsson. A product development process is developed by
which the thesis work and the report are structured.
Brainstorming is used to create a number of design solutions. The design solutions are
evaluated according to certain criteria and result in four concepts. Computer aided
analyses in which a falling object is dropped and pressure is applied onto the window
are performed on the four concepts and a reference model.
Conclusion
The results from the analyses form a basis for the conclusions. The mechanical
performance of the four concepts is compared to each other and to the reference
model. The analyses and the comparisons result in a general design guide in where
guidelines are presented of how to design a thin LCD-system with retained or
improved mechanical performance. (Less)
