Stroke Sensing for Pneumatically Activated Disc Brakes
(2003)Innovation
- Abstract
- When developing a truck it is of critical importance that the brake system is reliable and effective. When testing new trucks or brake systems you need to collect as much data as possible. One important measurand when you evaluate a pneumatic brake system is the stroke of the actuator.
This master’s thesis has two goals; one is to develop a device for measuring the stroke of a pneumatic actuator mounted on the disc brake of a truck, bus or trailer. This measuring device is to be used in a laboratory environment and it should also be possible to mount it on test vehicles. The second goal is to thoroughly evaluate the possibilities with a number of technologies for future reference. These technologies are:

This measuring device is to be used in a laboratory environment and it should also be possible to mount it on test vehicles. The second goal is to thoroughly evaluate the possibilities with a number of technologies for future reference. These technologies are:
• Ultra Sonics
• Electrical transducers; Inductive, Capacitive and Resistive
• Optics
• Magnetism
• Coding/Scanners
After examining the chosen technologies only one idea remained as a feasible solution for this project. Based on this one idea a prototype was developed and tested. This prototype is basically a transmission which transforms the linear stroke of the actuator into a rotation. This rotation is then measured by a rotational resistive transducer. The transmission is on account of the tight space inside the actuator mounted between the calliper of the disc brake and the actuator in a 15 mm distance. Testing with different load cases verified the functionality of this prototype. The results of the tests are that the prototype, as it is configured at the moment, has an accuracy of approximately ± 0.15 mm and a resolution of 0.1 mm. The confirmed life span is 100 000 strokes but it is probably considerably longer. (Less)
