The Engineering Design Process at Tetra Pak R&D AB

Bramell, Heléne and Lundgren, Pia (2003)

Abstract
Problem Tetra Pak R&D AB needs to find working methods that can be
Formulation useful in their effort to develop a more formal, efficient and
effective engineering design process.
Objective The overall objective of this Masters’ thesis is to present a
formal description of the existing engineering design process
for the Department of Machine Technologies at Tetra Pak
Research & Development AB, which should result in a more
efficient and effective design process and point out problems
and deficiencies.
Method Different design methodologies were studied. Based on these
methodologies the authors developed a theoretical reference
model. A descriptive study was performed at Tetra Pak R&D

Method Different design methodologies were studied. Based on these
methodologies the authors developed a theoretical reference
model. A descriptive study was performed at Tetra Pak R&D
AB. Interviews were held with both internal department staff
and external company staff. The result of the descriptive study
was compared to the authors’ reference model. Problems and
quality deficiencies were identified and finally the most
frequently addressed problem was analysed.
The magnitude of this work was extensive. Time aspects forced
the authors to revise their ambition and focused on describing
the existing approach.
Conclusions A high level of experiences, creativity, good teamwork among
the personnel etc. creates a good design environment at Tetra
Pak R&D AB. Nevertheless, it exists an expressed need of a
clearly defined and formal design process as well as other
improvements concerning the existing approach. The
documentation routines are one specific example where future
efforts are needed. (Less)
