Abstract
This master thesis was conducted as a project for Faiveley Transport Nordic AB. The
company’s main operations are development and assembly of complete brake
solutions, brake products, wheels and couplings for rail vehicles.
The background of this project was a well thought out idea of a new generation of
friction brakes. The idea of V-brake is to complement or replace the block brake. A
problem with block brakes today is the amount of heat transferred to the wheels
during tough conditions which leads to changes in the material, and the wheels can

This master thesis was conducted as a project for Faiveley Transport Nordic AB. The
company’s main operations are development and assembly of complete brake
solutions, brake products, wheels and couplings for rail vehicles.
The background of this project was a well thought out idea of a new generation of
friction brakes. The idea of V-brake is to complement or replace the block brake. A
problem with block brakes today is the amount of heat transferred to the wheels
during tough conditions which leads to changes in the material, and the wheels can
get damaged. V-brake would enable vehicles and wagons to perform at a higher
velocity.
The overall objective of this project is to obtain a detailed design for the development
of a prototype of V-brake. This design is based on the demands and specifications
established for contemporary friction brakes mounted on the commuter train Lirex
X60. This also gives an indication of how V-brake would measure up to a more
modern brake, like the wheel disc brake. However, this objective proved to be too
extensive to be covered in this thesis. This is why the project had to be terminated
after the initial structural analysis.
To solve the task at hand, numerous calculations, analyses and evaluations had to be
conducted pertaining to the design shown in the figure below. To fulfill the established demands, a surprisingly large dimensioned V-brake was
obtained. Since no final detailed design or prototype was achieved, specifications
until now are to be considered as a measurement of how well the project’s overall
goal will be fulfilled in the future. These specifications are overall better than the ones
for the friction brake mounted on the X60. Despite this, there are doubts about how
well V-brake will compete against a wheel disc brake. In a comparison to the wheel
disc brake, it’s mostly the bigger space needed to achieve the same amount of brake
torque that works against V-brake. Another negative factor is that the V-brake will
probably wear out faster. However, the idea of V-brake is merely to complement or
