Abstract
We have conducted this master thesis for Heatex AB, located in Trelleborg. The company is the market leading OEM supplier of air-to-air heat exchangers. In a more and more competitive market, the demands on the design and the preparation for manufacturing are increasing making integration an important factor. Our work comprises the company’s design and preparation for manufacturing of cooling units used for electronics. The thesis’ overall aim was to make the design and the preparation for manufacturing of the cooling units more efficient.

We have conducted this master thesis for Heatex AB, located in Trelleborg. The company is the market leading OEM supplier of air-to-air heat exchangers. In a more and more competitive market, the demands on the design and the preparation for manufacturing are increasing making integration an important factor. Our work comprises the company’s design and preparation for manufacturing of cooling units used for electronics. The thesis’ overall aim was to make the design and the preparation for manufacturing of the cooling units more efficient.
The idea was that we should have an overall perspective in relation to making the design and the preparation for manufacturing in the company more efficient. The overall perspective resulted in a master thesis comprising several aims. One aim was to establish guidelines concerning the design within the company. Another was to evaluate alternative CAM-software to their turret punch press. The last aim was to review the CAD-models and the parameter control program, which the company makes use of when creating the manufacturing data for the cooling units.
We produced the guidelines partly out of literature within the area studied and partly out of our own experience from the work with the cooling units and the parametric control program. The guidelines contain advice concerning design strategy, name giving, modeling, dimensioning, assembling and modifying the parameters of the details.
The CAM-software evaluation showed that there were some programs on the market, which had the potential to perform better than the present one. Those programs in the evaluation, with high potential, were all modern in menus and functions, user friendly and possessed well-developed automatisation functions and at the same time they had many options and settings.
Our work with the models and the parameter control program led to a functioning assembly of the cooling unit. With a functioning assembly we imply that all sheet metal parts, manufactured in the turret punch press, fit together and that the functionality after the assembling is intact.
The overall perspective of this thesis did not make it possible for us to go the bottom of any specific areas. To accomplish a more efficient design and preparation for manufacturing it had been necessary to work in many different areas, such as CAD and CAM. (Less)
