Abstract
For many years the benefits of using stockings that exert a pressure on the legs,
to prevent and treat a number of health conditions, have been well known. For
just as many years carers and caretakers have been struggling to put on these
stockings onto the legs. The high compression strength of the stockings makes
it very difficult to put them on the way one does with ordinary stockings.
Today, methods like turning the stocking inside out, apply starch onto the leg
or using a plastic bag are used to simplify the application of the stocking.
The purpose of this project has been to design and develop an aid that can

Today, methods like turning the stocking inside out, apply starch onto the leg
or using a plastic bag are used to simplify the application of the stocking.
The purpose of this project has been to design and develop an aid that can
assist both carers and caretakers in putting on compressions stockings onto the
legs in an easy and painless manner. The most essential issue in this project has
been to early on in the process focus on the needs and wants of the users. To
ensure that this was done a method called Quality Functional Deployment was
used. This method translates the user needs identified in a survey into
requirements on the product, which then provide a base for the entire design
and development process. During the project several method were used in
order to ensure that the final product fulfilled the requirements.
The final product was an aid that can be used on most knee length compression
stockings on the market as well as ordinary stockings. The main market for the
aid is institutions but caretakers and their relatives in a home environment
could also benefit from the aid. The major advantage with the aid is that it
expands the stocking, which in turn reduces the force needed to put on the
stocking onto the leg. The aid also reduces the risk of damaging the skin of the
caretaker, which could easily be done if the stocking is put on manually.
By using the developed aid the caregivers are given the opportunity to reduce
their usually heavy workload and at the same time the caretakers are spared
during the application of the stockings. (Less)
