Abstract
This thesis deals with the possible tension between a good peace process and accountability for atrocities breaching international humanitarian law and international human rights law that might exists in the post Gaza war situation in the Middle East. The study is using qualitative method to analyze the Goldstone report in a contextual, holistic approach in order to estimate its impact on a future peace process between Israel and Palestine. A liberal form of realism is used to explain both the anarchic state system that leaves the national state to no one but itself to ensure its survival and the existence of norms and rules which makes peace and cooperation possible.

The thesis concludes that the Goldstone report might be a new strategy from the UN to try to come to terms with the situation. Since the peace process has failed more than one time and UN-resolutions and reports hasn’t done much to alter the situation the interpretation is that the Goldstone report serves as a way to tackle the situation from a human rights perspective. The conclusion also reveals that the US position on human rights accountability will play a major role. Will US be able to restore its lost credibility by turning down the Goldstone report? (Less)
