Abstract
The purpose of this study is to give clarity on the use of Swedish identity and the definition of Swedish identity in the Swedish national political debate between 1976 – 2006. The results show that the use of Swedish identity is increased over time, but with an exceptional increase between 1985 and 1994. The results also show that the three biggest parties have tended to enact more similar definitions of Swedish identity over time, thus creating a more universal definition of Swedish identity in the Swedish national political debate. This identity consists of certain values such as; Welfare, solidarity, equality, modernity, and environmental concern. Sverigedemokraterna defines Swedish identity in the form of a reactionary defensive identity, which is in opposition to the political establishment and its definition of Swedish identity. (Less)
