- Abstract (Swedish)
- In Sweden opinions are strongly divided on the issue of integration. In a study from 2007 four parallel discourses on integration in the Swedish debate were identified. They are labeled the liberal-, the social democratic-, the structural discrimination discourse and finally a discourse of assimilation. A fifth is discussed briefly – the critical humanist position. In this report I take a closer look at this last position.
The method that is used is a qualitative textual analysis of the Swedish debate on integration and immigration, a debate that take place in the media as well as in the academic literature. The method that is used is a qualitative textual analysis of the Swedish debate on integration and immigration, a debate that take place in the media as well as in the academic literature. The main research question is what the main features of this discourse are. These features are compared to the four other discourses.
The journalists and academics that are a part of this discourse are critical to Islamism and cultural relativism as well as the concept Islamofobia. A sharp criticism is pointed towards the polarized debate in Sweden, a debate influenced mainly by the ideas of multiculturalism. One of the main arguments is that multiculturalists and nationalist rest on the same ideas of what culture are - ideas that are harmful for a democratic society. The analysis points to a rather infected debate on integration, where blurry concepts like discrimination and racism, politically correctness and cultural diversity surface time and again. (Less)
