- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine how professionals within the social services who work with drug abuse think and feel about methadone and subutex as a treatment against heroin addiction. I have used qualitative interviews to receive information about the respondent’s experiences, views and attitudes. I have interviewed three social workers from different municipalities. The municipalities vary in size and population and are neighboring municipalities. All three of the municipalities is apart of the same region and uses them same methadone and subutex programs. I have also interviewed a representative from the Swedish users association. The representative was primarily used as a reference point to develop my analysis of the problems... (More)

I have also interviewed a representative from the Swedish users association. The representative was primarily used as a reference point to develop my analysis of the problems in the treatment described by the social workers. The results where analyzed on the basis of a theoretical perspective, the rational choice theory. It’s clear in the result that all of the respondents had a positive attitude towards medical treatment against heroin addiction. All of the respondents confirms that they se heroin addiction as a disease and that they find comfort in the guide lines provided by the national board of health and welfare. The respondents did, however, share light on what in the Rational choice theory is known as perverse consequences. Perverse consequences in this case means rational decisions and rules on a collective level, witch can manifest itself as irrational as well as harmful at a individual level. The social workers described how laws and guide lines put limits on what options they consider practicable. They describe how the boundaries and rules sometimes induce effects that counteract the explicit goal of the treatment; witch in this case is helping people with heroin abuse problems. (Less)
