- The purpose of this study is to qualitatively investigate how mid-level managers from care of the elderly and compulsory school can handle the complex position in the middle of the organization. A position distinguished by unclear boundaries and demands from both superiors and subordinates. The study is based on qualitative interviews with four managers from care of the elderly and four principals from compulsory school. Our interviews had themes based on our purpose. They were divided into questions covering how the mid-level managers described the structure in their specific organization, how they described their everyday work and what type of strategies they formed to get by. Our analysis is based on the organizational theory of the structural perspective and additionally Moxnes theory of psyche and social needs and the conception of power. Our conclusions show that the position in the middle of the organization is difficult and complex according to our respondents. They have all formed individual strategies to manage this lonesome and overladen position. The respondents also agreed on the fact that they experienced more difficult demands from superiors than from subordinates. When we summed our conclusions we found little differences between the mid-level managing position as a manager from the care of the elderly and a principal. They were, in fact, much a like. By comparing the two mid-level managers we found a more prominent development in the care of the elderly organization than in school organization, regarding staff, structure and management. (Less)
