Abstract
Stress among children and youth is increasing and there are thought to be numerous different explanatory factors. Examples of those are the growing demands of society, lacking support from adults, as well as significant amounts of aspects in school. According to the Swedish education act a school is obliged to incorporate student care, wherein which a school nurse should be included. No other guidelines exist for the inclusion of any other professions, how these services and resources should be allocated or generally how the student care should be carried out. This means that student care within the educational system is shaped differently depending on which municipality it belongs to. The purpose of this study was to investigate and... (More)
Stress among children and youth is increasing and there are thought to be numerous different explanatory factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the occurrence of stress amongst students in secondary school and the work of student welfare in preventing and attending to stress in a secondary school in Skåne. The study was carried out using method triangulation, where interviews were realized with three active professions within student care and surveys were distributed in three selected classes among 53 students. Empirics were analyzed from the demands of Karasek and Theorell, control and support theory. Results showed that at least every second student reports very frequently feeling stress in school. Common contributors to stress were exams, submissions, that students don’t have time to complete set out tasks, as well as grades. Many students also claimed that they experienced different symptoms of stress, such as stomach ache, head ache, difficulties in concentration, and irritation. Results additionally concluded that negative stress amid secondary school students can be reduced with high student influence, significant control of studies on behalf of the students, as well as considerable social support. Further it emerged that this support in many cases derives from teachers. It also appeared that the operations of student welfare are being practiced without any clear guidelines, and that work preventing stress can not be prioritized due to lack of time and resources. Moreover the perception exists, with active professions, that a change in legislation, which in the education act regulates service and resources within the student welfare system, is necessary.
