- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine the discourse of unaccompanied refugee children, also called separated children, in Swedish newspapers. More specifically the aim was to observe how the separated children are presented and constructed in the Swedish newspapers after a great debate emerged around that the municipality of Vellinge was not willing to accept unaccompanied refugee children in the autumn of 2009. The study was based on empirical data in form of newspaper articles from three Swedish daily newspapers which were analyzed by using critical discourse analysis, a method often used when analyzing texts. The study was based on empirical data in form of newspaper articles from three Swedish daily newspapers which were analyzed by using critical discourse analysis, a method often used when analyzing texts. The discourse analysis is not only a research method but also implies a theoretical approach. The analysis method and the theoretical approach are based on a social constructivist perspective. I found some interesting smaller discourses that I have analyzed and named them “the public order threat”, “the stranger”, “the helpless children” and “the responsibility of the new arrival separated children”. My conclusion of the study is that the separated children are constructed in the three Swedish newspapers in two different ways, either as helpless children or as threats from outside the community. These two pictures of the separated children lead to a discussion in media about the responsibility for the new arrival children. Discussions in media can lead to social changes like constitutions of new laws or changes of old laws. In this study there is no law changed but there is a discussion in the newspaper articles about changing the law of the new arrival unaccompanied refugee children or not. (Less)
