Abstract
Abstract
Previous research has shown that welfare officers have gradually left behind what is considered traditional social work in favor of therapy treatments and this is mainly due to the high degree of further educations in psychotherapy amongst them. The purpose of this study is to examine whether this is true within the welfare officer occupation and in particular regarding the psychiatric welfare officer.
The questions at issue are:
-Is the psychiatric treatment prioritized over social work in regard of patients with a
psychiatric complex of problems, in particular regarding psychiatric offices?
-Do the welfare officers of the psychiatric offices and health care centers experience that there is a natural social position for... (More)

-Do the welfare officers of the psychiatric offices and health care centers experience that there is a natural social position for their profession or do they experience an overlaps of work assignments with other professions?
-Are there any differences of view between the two groups?
In order to get results I have interviewed four welfare officers, two within each category, and the head of a psychiatric office.
The interviews were transcribed and analyzed from the theoretical points of view of structuralization and professionalization. The results where then subsequently divided into and based on three different themes; work assignments, social position and territory.
The results from the analysis shows that there is a difference in work assignments between the psychiatric welfare officer and the health care welfare officer, mainly regarding therapeutical treatments, which are more commonly given by the psychiatric welfare officer. The results also show, contrary to previous studies, that both groups believe to be equal to their colleagues. The over lapses of work assignments, though they do occur, are rare. (Less)
