(2010) PSPT01 20092Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
- Abstract
- The study aimed to investigate if a cognitive behavioral therapy with family support, specifically designed for children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive dis-order (OCD) undergoing assessment and treatment at a psychiatric clinic in Lund, Sweden, was effective in reducing symptoms. There was also analysis into whether family accommodation, co-morbidity, medication, time on waiting list, age and sex, influenced the treatment result and if new psychiatric symptoms appeared post-treatment. The participants were 45 children and adolescents (21 boys and 24 girls) aged between 8-18 years. OCD-symptoms and family accommodation were measured before and after treatment and at a one year follow-up with Swedish versions of the Children’s... (More)

The participants were 45 children and adolescents (21 boys and 24 girls) aged between 8-18 years. OCD-symptoms and family accommodation were measured before and after treatment and at a one year follow-up with Swedish versions of the Children’s Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive scale (CY-BOCS) and the Family Accommodation Scale for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (FAS). The treatment proved to be effective with a mean symptom reduction at 49 % post-treatment and a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.65). At follow-up the symptoms had decreased further. Neither family accommodation, co-morbidity, medication, time on waiting list, age nor sex influenced the results significantly. Children and adolescents presenting more symptoms before treatment were also given more sessions. Thirteen of the children and adolescents were under further psychiatric care after the treatment because of new diagnoses or other psychiatric problems, the most frequent of which were depression, thoughts of suicide and/or anxiety disorders. The results point towards the conclusion that the treatment is beneficial for children and adolescents with OCD, indicating its viability as a form of therapy within this area. (Less)
