The aim of this study was to examine lesbian mothers experiences of the nursing context during their pregnancy. The research questions were: (1) How do lesbians experience the encounters with the nursing context? (2) What are their experiences? (3) Does their experiences of the nursing context show signs of heteronormative care? I used qualitative method and executed an interview study. Six semi-structured interviews with totally nine lesbian mothers and/or soon to be mothers were conducted. To analyse the result of the interviews were queer theory and the concept of discourse used. The findings showed that the nursing context, related to pregnancy, had a lot of the times a heteronormative approach and this generated negative experiences among the lesbian mothers. I found that the heteronormative attitudes and behaviour was included in both the nursing staff and the institution. My thesis is that the nursing context was a part of a heteronormative discourse. The heteronormativity was mainly visible in the communication and the language used by the staff members and the institution. As an example I observed that the concepts of “dad” were used instead of the more gender-neutral concept “partner”. The use of these gender specific concepts made the non-biologic mothers to feel invisible and excluded. Three strategies were found and used by the interviewed women in helping them handle the heteronormative context. The lesbian mothers wanted the nursing staff to; not assume heterosexuality, change, the use of language and learn more about homosexuality, bisexuality and transgender people.
