A qualitative ethnographic study has been conducted in which discourse theory formed the theoretical basis. The empirical material consists of articles and letters to the editor of the evening papers, analyzed and processed by a content-analytical approach. The text shows how the threat of the epidemic disease create concern in the different arenas, and in that turn creating meaning about how best to avoid being infected. The conclusion is that the prevailing discourses about disease and infection may be linked to the ideas of hygiene and cleanliness that characterized the 1950s. (Less)
