Abstract
Summary
The station has always played an important role in development. In Sweden, railway building started in the middle of the 1900th century. The government financed the main rail lines, while private railway companies financed the small lines. The expansion of the railway lines was lead and planned by militaries, therefore the stations generally were drawn by trained militaries. Several station construction workers travelled abroad in order to study stations.
Many of the private line’s station buildings were drawn by layman or signboard agencies, which contributed that several stations look alike each other. The bigger stations got a position that emulated the church and the council house.

Many of the private line’s station buildings were drawn by layman or signboard agencies, which contributed that several stations look alike each other. The bigger stations got a position that emulated the church and the council house.
In the beginning of the railway's building time it was important to produce an inexpensive station building that could to supply all necessary services, as vestibule, sale of tickets, luggage storage, offices and waiting room. Post- and telegram offices were also available on stations of that time..
The railway needs a straight line with small inclinations. It should also be drawn so that trespasses, disturbances, barrier effects and risks are limited. The station should be located as central as possible with regard for existing and planned residential areas, workplaces, services, education and existing traffic systems. Special important is it that regional functions are located near the station.
The station will be the point of intersection between different transport systems, which means a good access and an often attractive situation in the town. A well designed station will be easy to find and to reach. The technical systems will be understandable and applicable for the persons that will be served. The travellers have needs of service before, during and after the travel that in various ways can be linked to the terminal. The station building should be given such a design that it advertises the terminal as a travel centre. The building ought to be oriented and formulated so that the travellers easily can see the traffic on the station. Customer requirements as information, sale of tickets, good illumination, parking possibilities, transfer buses, taxi parking and travellers parking areas, rain protections will please the customers. In southern Sweden it is common not to build any waiting room or that it is considered to be tiny. The reason for this is that they might be a place for troublesome elements.. In northern Sweden this argument is less common. There, the waiting room is needed due to a harsher climate.
Modern stations have become more equipped for functionally disabled persons. There different aids are needed in order to meet these people. (Less)
